ILLUSTRATION | KNITWEAR DESIGN | FIGURE SKATING
Jake Canton is a New York City based visual artist, illustrator and knitwear designer, as well as a figure skating coach.
Jake’s art practices focuses on telling stories. Be it through drawing, painting, knitting, designing or choreography, he strives to convey a narrative while exploring concepts of identity, gender expression and the relationship between the mind and body.
Jake draws inspiration from his childhood, examining his own identity and the various influences that shaped him in those early years of life. Through color and drawing style Jake creates work that is both nostalgic yet unexpected. He finds inspiration in movement of the human form and frequently draws inspiration from figure skating, his first passion in life. In addition he creates figure skating choreography which he combines with his knitwear and visual art practices.
Originally from the Boston area, Jake received a B.F.A in Textiles from the Rhode Island School of Design, before going on to design knitwear and write knitting patterns for the yarn company Purl Soho. He has also designed knitwear on a freelance basis in the fashion industry. Freelance clients have included: Thom Browne, Proenza Schouler, Jason Wu, Kate Spade, Bode, A.L.C., M.M. La, Fleur, Another Tomorrow, Tanya Taylor, Agbobly, DEGEN, and many more. He continues to freelance in knitwear design.
